Marie-Kondo guided us all on decluttering our overstuffed closets and neatly folding our socks, but she skipped over one of the best dresser drawers: our sex toys and other sexy stuff!
What to Keep?
The first part of any good declutter is the piles. Start by pulling out any condoms or lubricants to check expiration dates. Then, move onto the harder decisions: sex toys and other objects.
Condoms
Condoms last one to five years, depending on the material. Check the box or the foil of the individual condom for its expiration date. Any past date goes into the garbage. Using expired ones is not a risk worth taking!
Lubricant
Lubricants last up to seven years, but they do expire. The best way to check is to inspect the lube yourself. Has it changed? Check the color, opacity, smell, and consistency compared to how it used to be.
Sex Toys
Then, just like stacking up every sweater onto the bed to go through and decide which you wear enough, go through your sex toys in the same way.
When did you use it last?
Go-to favorites move to the keep pile real fast, but anything that hasn’t come out in a couple of months goes under new scrutiny.
Does it have a special circumstance?
Some toys just don’t come out often, but when they do. Oh, when they do… Those toys might be worth keeping, even if they only see action every six months. Consider putting them in their own bag or box so they stay clean and separate from your go-tos.
Will you use it again?
Anything else, it’s time to trial. Give toys a second chance, if you want, before casting them into the reject pile. If you’re not planning to use it again, clear it out. A toy collecting dust doesn’t do you any good.
In fact, clearing out those meh toys is a blessing in disguise. With a drawer full of favorites, each time to play becomes a delight without the guilt of toys sitting to the side looking sad they aren’t getting picked.
How to Get Rid of Them?
Now, with a pile of toys and the like to clear out, the question is how?
Pass Them On
Some high-quality toys can be disinfected and passed on. Toys made from silicone, glass, Pyrex, or stainless steel can be fully disinfected and safely passed onto a friend who might get along with them better.
Start with a wash with fragrance-free soap and hot water, but some toys can be cleaned deeper for extra assurance. Silicone, Pyrex, and stainless steel are heat resistant so they can be boiled or run through the dishwasher to disinfect. Sex objects, like paddles made of leather that aren’t inserted, can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol to cleanse the surface.
Once they are clean, reach out to friends or sex partners that might be into a hand-me-down.
Recycle
Recycling your sex toys through your traditional options (recycling pick-up or drop-off) is rare. For some people, it’s just not an option at all. In the past retailers offered recycling services in the UK and in the US, but the locations in the US have closed down over the past few years. If you find a location that will accept your old sex toy, be sure to follow all directions when recycling, especially cleaning the toys prior to sending, or they won’t make it to the recycling process at all.
Toss ‘Em Out
Once you’ve reused and recycled, everything else is set for the trash. Toss them out and relish in a fresh, tidy drawer every time you play.
Conclusion
Marie-Kondo missed out on a great opportunity to de-clutter the sexy stuff, but you don’t have to. Getting rid of your old adult toys means you have room for something new, too!
